What chemical or property is capable of deflecting ultra violet light?
A character is attempting to smuggle resin capsicum through the jail mail room. It must go undetected through x-rays and ultra violet light.
Is this possible?
Deflecting UV is difficult because the word “deflecting” does not have a scientific meaning. Reflection has a specific meaning, and absorption has a specific meaning.
Assuming you mean absorption, the answer is simple: extended pi bonding systems (for example double bonds in conjugation) absorb light of different wavelengths depending on the geometry and type of extended pi system. Using para amino benzoic acid in sunscreen (PABA) takes advantage of this behavior.
If, on the other hand, you meant reflection, that is more difficult. It requires that you have a chemical that has an index of refraction at the relevant wavelengths sufficient to reflect UV as it tries to pass through the substance.
