I’d like to decorate my fireplace with tile/stone , What kind of set do I use? It does get pretty hot there.?
It has bare metal edges.
You can use either.. I ve done literally 100s of fireplaces. Most codes, but this depends on the chamber type you have, call for a non combustible material up to that metal edge and wood mantel or legs no closer than 8″to the chamber any way. But this varies w/ the type and size opening you have and your local codes.
Most commonly used is a 12 ” type size tile, but it s a personal choice. You didn t mention the hearth, but I touch on this also. Most codes, and again this varies, call for a depth of 21 “.Wood burners and all gas chambers, the codes vary a lot .
Do the hearth ( if you are doing a hearth) 1st. Don t expect to try and line up the legs w/ the hearth tile.. With a fire place its difficult. You may even have to cut a key stone on the tile/ stone going over the top ( header) You asked, “What kind of set do I use?” I m guessing you want to know setting material, A latex or modified thinset is the only thing you want to use.
