Is becoming a professional musician a good career?
I’ve been playing percussion for 8 years now and I’m a junior in high school. I’m in the chicago youth symphony and i really enjoy music. I’ve been seriously considering majoring in music, but I always hear how unstable the career of a professional musician is. It’s the path I want to choose, but I’m not sure what to think.
I went through the same thing, but with Musical Theater. My advice is to major in something more practical, and minor in music. Remember…when it comes to the arts…you don’t need to major in it to be successful. You can be a street musician and get your big break! So, why waste your college degree on something like that?
What happened to me was that I refused to major in anything other than Musical Theater. My parents made a deal with me that if I got into my #1 choice school for Musical Theater, I could major in it. They didn’t expect me to get in since it was one of the top 5 schools for Musical Theater in the US. Well, guess what?! I got in! haha! So, I went and majored in Musical Theater. It was there that I discovered I was no longer a big fish in a small pond….I was a little fish in a HUGE pond!!! There was so much talent there, and my self-esteem went down the toilet.
I struggled there for a year and a half, until I finally decided to transfer to another school and major in Communication. I ended up graduating with a Communication degree and a Music minor. I am SO glad I did that!!! It was the best decision I’ve ever made. I now have an actual non-music/theater related career, where I make a steady income…and I was able to purchase my first home this year!!! Most of my former classmates are struggling artists (waiters/waitresses, bartenders, nannies, etc.). I still perform all of the time…I do community theater and have SO much fun (sometimes when your hobby becomes your job, it’s not fun anymore….when it’s just recreational, it’s a great release from a stressful day!). I also get to go on QVC every now and then to sell some products from my company. So, I still get to use my music and theater skills in my job!!!
Obviously it’s a personal choice for you, but I’m just speaking from experience. If I decided tomorrow that I wanted a career on Broadway, I could go and audition. I don’t need that BFA!
Best of luck to you!!! Email me if you have any questions.
