it is an igneous rock
it is an extrusive rock (formed on the surface of the earth)
it is formed when magma flows out onto the earth’s surface ( usually a volcanic eruption ) it is now refered to as lava
it quickly cools forming basalt
basalt is a resistant heavy rock
it is dark and fine-grained
it contains small crystals of quartz, feldspar and sometimes iron
it forms a distinctive landscape called a basalt plateau
e.g. antrim-derry plateau (giants causeway) in ireland
a plateau consists of 5-6 sided columns grouped together that formed as the lava cooled
